I own a service company that is looking at closing my doors. How much should I sell my customer leads for?

My service company is closing its doors after 8 years in business. Most of the customers have been around for an average of 5 years. It has taken me a long time to build up the customer base, and I want to sell off the leads, which are solid, to a local competitor. How much can and should I expect to sell the leads for?

We have bought two different companies that were closing their doors.

We actually just bought the customer lists and their phone numbers. One was $5000, the other was $500. The $5000 company was in business over 30 years and had a huge list of customers and the phone were busy. The $500 company had been in business about 8 years and wasn't as busy.

There is no easy answer. Approach your competitor as you are ready to close and negotiate a deal. I wouldn't do it too soon or word may get out to your customers and business will drop off.
